Looking << Touching >> Feeling

Laura Waite’s practice is focused on exploring the boundary between looking and touching, internal and external, masculine and feminine. She uses raw materials that serve as strong conductors of memories, feelings and abject reactions: paper, fabric, hair, flesh, plaster, wax. These turn into sculptures and photographs that are unplaceable yet linger on the brink of recognition, conjuring up associations with the body. Often Waite’s work receives a visceral and immediate response. Her aim is to simultaneously present the intriguing and uncomfortable, tactile yet repulsive and encourage people to question the collective and personal reactions they have to a piece.
