“This book could not have been written while sitting still. The relationships between paths, walking and the imagination is it’s subject and much of it’s thinking was therefore done - was only possible - while on foot.” Robert MacFarlane, Author’s Note in ‘The Old Ways’

This work could not have been made while sitting still. Nicola Pearce is an Artist and Curator who moves around the city on foot and by bicycle and tries to see the places that she encounters everyday in a different way. Pearce documents fleeting urban moments such as lines made by long evening shadows, a building half torn down or the scaffolding around building sites with the motivation that seeing the city differently will help people change their perception of and gain more control over the environment in which they live. The city is a place for people. Pearce chooses her media carefully - ink, graphite, photography - to record her journeys through the city. By making these recordings the place reveals different aspects of itself - if you look at where you live in a different way, what do you see?
